Up the Northeast Road, hidden in the hills, was a sprawl of five low buildings. Two were bunkhouses, one served as a barn housing a number of quiet-running electric bikes, one as a storehouse, one as a meeting hall with an attached kitchen. Vahl stepped out of the last, gnawing on a cooked chicken leg. Clearing it of meat, he tossed the bone at Leilia, who sat huddled against the outside wall. Her arms and legs, covered with blood, appeared to be limp and useless. Her expression however, was one of defiance. Pain, if she’d experienced it, was something she’d gotten past. She stared at him with wordless accusation and it required some effort for him to remember that she was powerless.

Vahl studied the sky and took a deep breath. “You boys about ready?” he shouted.

Cries of confirmation rose up variously from about the camp.

“He could show up any time, so hide yourselves. Remember: this is for you more than it is for me. I’m talking to you, Duono. Don’t show your back and run or I’ll kill you myself.”

Kev Duono stared out from within the barn, fear, hate, and disgust all mixed together on his face. “I’ll do my part,” he said.
